ÇEVRE HIGHLIGHTS - 24.SAYI
37 HAZ ø RAN 2023 so many people in a large laboratory, is that very large experimental setups are required. So much so that a university or even a country cannot cope alone, both economically and in terms of human contribution, bringing so many people together, bringing together people with different talents and different characteristics, is the largest and, at the same time, the most important interdisciplinary laboratory in the world. 7. Why is the news from CERN so important to the rest of the world? Because the information coming from there is exactly what equals zero one. As a result, everyone prioritizes it and is concerned about it. 8. Were any questions left unanswered at CERN? Many! But guess what... When an experiment is carried out and the results are not as expected or targeted, you may think to yourself, “Look, they tried, they couldn’t find it, they failed.” It is not the case. To try something and see that it is not so is again to get something from scratch. You realize what is wrong. We extract information once more. That means a finding. As a result, we learn how not to do it! 9. What are the hopes for the ATLAS and CAST experiments? CAST was a 12-year experiment that ended last year. It took 100 people to complete. It has turned out negatively, but negativity is still a data for scientists. The ATLAS experiment is still in progress. 3,500 people are employed, and a 40-meter-high device 100 meters underground is constantly gathering data. It is a research project that will be completed in 2040. 10. Could Turkey benefit from a large particle accelerator like CERN? A particle accelerator the size of CERN cannot be used anywhere in the world. It could be smaller or more complementary. The important thing to remember is that accelerator complexes can be found all over the world, including Turkey. I was already a member of the team that designed such an accelerator complex in Turkey with a large state budget. This was a project that took place between 2005 and 2015. We proposed what could be done, what type of facility it would be, and what features it would include. Unfortunately, it is currently sitting on the state’s shelves, waiting to be realized. Perhaps you will realize it.
